Floor Coating and the Darwin Wet Season in Darwin

Darwin's year is two seasons, and the Bureau of Meteorology's record shows how far apart they are: a mean of 432.1 mm of rain in January against 1.1 mm in July. We found no Territory source that says what that does to a coating, so none is claimed. The question for a contractor is what they do when the weather turns.

What floor coating in the wet season in Darwin actually involves

Darwin Airport's table gives mean rainfall of 432.1 mm in January, 372.2 mm in February and 310.7 mm in March, against 1.7 mm in June and 1.1 mm in July. Mean 9 am relative humidity is 83 per cent in February and 60 per cent in June and July (Bureau of Meteorology, read 6 October 2026).

What it does not say

It is a monthly average for one airport station. It does not say what moisture a floor slab holds, or how a coating behaves in humid air, and we found no Territory source that does, so we state no limit and no effect.

What to ask about the weather

Ask how the contractor deals with the season, whether the slab is checked for moisture before anything is applied, and what happens to the schedule if rain arrives in the middle of the job. Ask what the quote says if the work has to wait, and who decides. None of that is a rule: the rules that do apply are on the costs page.

A floor that has had water on it is worth mentioning when you describe the job. The NT Government's flood pages name The Narrows, Millner and Yarrawonga for flooding, and the suburb pages set out what each says.

Floor Coating and the Darwin Wet Season in Darwin — common questions

Is the wet season a bad time to coat a floor?

We cannot say. Darwin Airport averages 432.1 mm of rain in January and 1.1 mm in July, but no Territory source we read gives a limit for a coating. Ask the contractor what their system needs and what they do if the weather is outside it.

Does humidity matter?

Mean 9 am relative humidity at Darwin Airport is 83 per cent in February and 60 per cent in June and July. We state no effect on a coating.

Should the slab be checked for moisture first?

It is a fair question to put to the contractor. We found no Territory source on moisture in slabs, so we state no test and no limit.
